Stay Responsive, Scalable, and Cost-Efficient with Event-Driven Architecture

Event-driven applications are assembled from lightly coupled services that are triggered by events such as transactions, data arrival, or other systems. Event-driven applications can run code on AWS Lambda, where you only pay for the time it takes to run the code, making it easier to scale without overspending.

At Qalius, we specialize in web applications that use on-demand computing services from AWS. We combine general-purpose compute services, such as AWS Lambda, with specialized services, such as AWS artificial intelligence services, to implement a custom solution that suits your unique requirements.

No matter how unusual your business rules are, our AWS and web application specialists will develop the right event-stream processing solution.

Only Pay For What You Use

When you use an event-driven architecture, business activity triggers resource provisioning. Since you don’t pay for idle resources, the solution has low AWS service costs that scale with the event volume.

Worry-free Scaling

Event-driven architectures are well suited for applications built from lightly coupled services that scale horizontally. Qalius uses AWS services such as API Gateway that scale automatically across multiple Amazon Availability Zones, and AWS Lambda that permits concurrent executions to cope with practically any change in your business.

Fault Tolerance

Event-driven application architectures have components that are loosely coupled through an event bus. These architectures are fault-tolerant when they are designed to queue events until processing capacity becomes available. The result is an application that copes with the temporary loss of a third-party service or the failure and retry of an individual transaction.

Event-Driven Architecture Use Cases

Run Daily Tasks

Execute functions such as data aggregation, report generation, or archiving, triggered on a schedule or by data arrival.

Extend a Legacy Application

Add features to an existing application without updating the legacy source code, by adding serverless components that are triggered by the actions of the existing application.

Process Discrete Transactions

Process transactions as they occur to validate the transaction, update third-party systems, implement your custom business rules, or apply real-time analytics.

Access Advanced AWS Services

Trigger the execution of AWS services to add advanced capabilities to a new or legacy application, delivering generative AI, business intelligence, and other capabilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is event-driven architecture?

Event-driven application architectures are built from components that each perform a specialized process. An event triggers each component. The event is usually the arrival of an input that needs to be processed. The input could be a transaction submitted to your business, the arrival of a file to process, or intermediate outputs from earlier stages of the application process.

What is an example of event-driven architecture?

Event-driven architectures are applicable in countless use cases where an event occurs and that event immediately triggers other events. An example is when an application recognizes that a picture has been submitted (a triggering event), uses the Amazon Rekognition service from AWS to see if it contains any cats (event processing), and then updates a cat counter (the output) with the number of cats spotted in pictures this week.

What are the principles of event-driven architectures?

Event-driven architectures should implement their event processing in discrete process steps. The steps should be decoupled by queuing work in between process steps. The queues ensure that transactions don’t get lost if a process step is temporarily unavailable. Event-driven architectures should be built on on-demand services such as AWS Lambda so you only pay for cloud services when there is a triggering event that requires processing.

What is AWS Lambda?

AWS Lambda is a serverless, event-driven compute service that lets you run code for virtually any type of application or backend service without provisioning or managing servers.

Which language is best for AWS Lambda?

AWS Lambda has native support for several runtimes enabling your code to be written in Node.js, Python, Go, Ruby, .NET, and Java. Qalius recommends considering the breadth and depth of expertise in your organization to be sure you can support the solution long-term. Runtimes such as Node.js and Python initialize quickly so they are a good choice for use cases where executions are intermittent and low latency is important. Java may take longer to initialize, but the code may execute quickly, which can reduce cost in use cases that have long-running processes.

What is a key benefit of AWS Lambda?

The AWS Lambda service was launched in 2014 and has benefited from many years of refinement with large and small global workloads. At Qalius, we especially appreciate that AWS Lambda integrates easily with many AWS services to reduce time-to-market for custom web applications. Recent enhancements improve AWS Lambda for enterprise use cases by streamlining connections to resources in private networks within Amazon VPC.
